LLL Evening Mtg. Sleep and the Challenges

Image
Join us Tuesday, June 14 at 7 pm, River Park Branch Library to discuss sleep,  breastfeeding and other baby challenges. What are normal sleep patterns for a newborn, what are some resources for new parents?  Bring your questions and your baby with you.  Expectant mothers also welcome. The St. Joseph County 4H Fair is coming up and every year the St. Joseph County Breastfeeding Coalition puts up a "Lactation Station" so nursing mothers have a nice, clean place to put their feet up and relax while they feed their babies. We are looking for volunteers to sit at the table and show the mothers where they may nurse. Click on the google doc below for more details and to sign up. Please share with anyone who might like to help. Thanks to all the volunteers! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tTPNlxAXsl7WU38PWBUB30cP83Fbc8QmKicrXzQiizI/edit#heading=h.j3rw2qwx0qe4                              ...

LLL mtg-Taking Care of Ourselves!

Image
At our next meeting we're going to explore our feelings about the intense transition to becoming a Mother. This new role can surprise us, rock us to our cores, and bore us silly, all in the space of an hour. How do we reconcile the popular image of the SuperMom with our own daily realities? And how about caring for ourselves in ways that don't disregard the needs of our babies and toddlers? What are some successes you've found for safe ways to exercise, eat well, sleep enough, and bring baby along for the ride? Come ready to seek comfort in those who understand, and share ideas and strategies. And we always make space for any other breastfeeding concerns or questions you may have! See you  Tuesday, July 22 at10am Women's Care Center 360 N. Notre Dame Ave. South Bend, Indiana 46617 **Don't forget about the St. Joseph County Breastfeeding Coalition World Breastfeeding Week Picnic**

Sleep & Other Baby Myths

Image
We've all seen breastfeeding used as the scapegoat for many issues with our babies and children--how do we stay strong in the face of doubts, particularly when we're sleep-deprived? There are as many sleep philosophies and set-ups as there are babies. Come share ideas of what has worked for your family, struggles you face, and an open heart for commiseration. This week we will also talk about how to dispel common breastfeeding myths and misconceptions, particularly as they relate to sleep, while staying confident in our parenting choices. We have several books in the LLL library you may want to check out, Dr. McKenna's "Sleeping with Your Baby: A Parent's Guide to Cosleeping, Whether You Do It Occasionally or Every Night, Do It Safely" and Dr. Sears's "Nighttime Parenting: How to Get Your Baby and Child to Sleep." Confidence in the Face of Myths and Misconceptions

Image
"You're STILL breastfeeding?" "The baby is so fussy, you're probably not making enough milk." "Give the baby cereal before bed and she'll sleep all night." "Why don't you take a break--I'll give the baby a bottle for you." I'm sure we've all seen breastfeeding used as the scapegoat for many issues in our babies and children--how do we stay strong in the face of doubts? This week we will talk about how to dispel common breastfeeding myths and misconceptions, while staying confident in our parenting choices. As always, we will have room for your breastfeeding questions, concerns, and successes. 10am on Tuesday, March 20 Sunnyside Presbyterian Church 115 S. Frances St. South Bend, IN 46617

Summer Strategies

Summer is almost upon us, and with it comes looser schedules, late night sunshine, and travel. All of that made for a good time before babies, but now it can complicate our lives. This Tuesday, let's share tips for interrupted sleep routines, sun protection, and well-meaning family/friends questioning our parenting and breastfeeding choices. Of course we will always have time for concerns you might have and insights you'd like to share, along with general chatting, support, and library perusal. See you Tuesday!

Sleep and Fatigue Survey

Drs. Kathleen Kendall-Tackett and Thomas Hale are researching mothers' sleep and fatigue, and invite mothers with babies under 12 mos. old to take their survey. They would like to include breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding women, and women of all ethnicities and income levels. The survey takes 20-30 min. and is completely confidential. It has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Amarillo, Texas. The link for the survey is: http://neonatal.ttuhsc.edu/lact The researchers hope to document: Where and how much do babies sleep? Are mothers who breastfeed and co-sleep more or less tired than mothers who don’t? Are mothers telling their friends, relatives and health care providers where their babies sleep? Are there ethnic group differences in where babies sleep? What is the role of depression, psychological trauma and difficult birth in mothers’ ongoing daytime fatigue? www.GraniteScientific.com www.Breastfee...
